Why Do People Lie About Domestic Violence?

In the eyes of the law, you are innocent until proven guilty. However, in most domestic violence cases, the perception seems to be the opposite. Because of the severity of the offense, many people automatically believe each accusation of domestic violence.
While no one wants to believe that someone would lie about something so serious, it does happen. There are many reasons that may drive an individual to falsely accuse someone of domestic violence.

Child Custody

One of the most common reasons, if not the most common reason, people lie about domestic violence is for child custody. During a contentious custody battle, people will go to extreme lengths to get the majority of parenting time or even sole custody of their children. When the courts are determining how custody should be split, they make decisions based on the child’s best interests. Typically, this means they grant joint custody.

However, sole custody is awarded in cases where it is believed one parent may be a danger to the children. When one parent falsely accuses the other of domestic violence, their goal is to have the court deem the other parent unfit for custody. Even if there is no proof of domestic violence, the accusation alone can be enough for the court to question the children’s safety with that parent.

False claims of domestic violence may also be made to turn the children against the other parent.

Revenge After A Break-Up

Another reason for false accusations is to get revenge after a relationship has ended. Perhaps one member of the relationship did not want to break up and is angry that the other did. To “get even,” they may falsely accuse their ex of domestic violence in an attempt to slander them.

Attention

Some people crave attention from others and will do anything to get it. This may mean making false domestic violence accusations.
